Sriwijaya Air crash: Indonesia's black box locator damaged - BBC News
Search teams say they have located the position of the aircraft's black boxes and have been combing the waters to find it.
But the KNKT on Tuesday said that a device used to locate black boxes had experienced "technical problems or equipment damage".
Black boxes - officially known as the flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder - store data about planes and can provide vital information in air accident investigations.
Authorities added that they were waiting for a new "ping locator" to arrive from Singapore.
It is unclear how the damaged locator affects the search, but local television on Tuesday showed footage of divers still looking for the black boxes.
Meanwhile several pieces of debris, body parts, wreckage and passengers' clothing have already been recovered.

@miksta 88 it's a pretty simple etymology. It refers back to a philosophical/engineering concept of a "black box". Essentially a device with unknown internal working that takes an input and process an output.

"planes keep falling" is a bit of an overstatement. You have no idea how many hundreds of thousands of flights occurred in these later years. Nonetheless we're talking about cheap airlines in less developed countries. While still very safe, maintenance and pilot experience are often a factor, as well as strong weather patterns in the area.

What is the black box
There are actually two black boxes (and they're actually painted bright orange or red.) One is the cockpit voice recorder (CVR), which does just what its names implies. The other is the Flight Data Recorder (FDR), which records dozens of different types of data such as altitude, airspeed, engine thrust settings, control surface positions, and too many other things to list here. Investigators can synchronize the data from both boxes and get a ton of information that can frequently lead them to the probable causes of a crash.
