Experts in the care sector are warning that the UK's new immigration rules will add to an existing crisis over recruiting staff to care for the elderly and disabled.
In England it’s estimated there are already 112,000 job vacancies in care homes and home care.
From January 2021 the UK’s new immigration rules mean that most overseas care workers will not earn enough to qualify for a work visa.
The government insists that care companies will be able to recruit enough people from within the UK.
Huw Edwards presents BBC News at Ten reporting by social affairs correspondent Alison Holt.

The casualisation of gendered care l labour means people are working for £3.12 per hour as they don't get paid national minimum wage for sleep ins so don't get remuneration for all the hours they're at work. It was already BAD.

  • Britons want better pay, that's all. Currently, the majority of our care workers come from commonwealth Africa. However, they are mistreated, paid low wages and majority tricked into working for nothing with the lie that their money would be sent to them. The recruitment agents have created a system whereby they drag this issue until the carer's work visa expires (work visas are usually very brief). The carers never see their money again! Government can resolve this issue very easily by recruiting directly without the recruitment middlemen agents and paying better wages. Not long ago, (before social care and NHS and before industries were sent packing to india and china back in 1960s to 1980s), people took care of their parents and older kinsmen. People worked together, helped each other out. The level of individualism has set us all back at least 80years...why? Because now we focus on materialistic useless things. We focus on 'having it all' when we don't really need to. It's a catch 22...work, place child in care then work some more to pay for care bills/needs etc, etc. We gladly chase our tails in the pursuit of 'a good life' but lose everything that actually makes life good...love, caring, helping, compassion etc, etc. We can change this narrative but only if we want to.

  • Care sector isn't just care homes. Most of us disabled and elderly receive care at home. And it's has been in crisis for years. Poor pay, poor hrs ect make it unattractive to start. And it isn't an easy job, despite what people think. Looking after people often intimately, often people who are struggling on their best days, takes extraordinary patience and compassion. Post brexit carers are unlikely to qualify under the new rules, and I don't think uk has any idea how difficult disabled lives already are and how little actual help there is.

Elderly pay enough to the care homes and half the time they cannot understand what some of those with foreign accents are saying. However nice thy may be, communication is imperative both in our hospitals where again the standard of some English is appalling and by care givers alike. • Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples: “The teachers of the law and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat. So you must be careful to do everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach. They tie up heavy, cumbersome loads and put them on other people’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them. Everything they do is done for people to see: They make their phylacteries wide and the tassels on their garments long; they love the place of honor at banquets and the most important seats in the synagogues; they love to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces and to be called ‘Rabbi’ by others. “But you are not to be called ‘Rabbi,’ for you have one Teacher, and you are all brothers. And do not call anyone on earth ‘father,’ for you have one Father, and he is in heaven. Nor are you to be called instructors, for you have one Instructor, the Messiah. The greatest among you will be your servant. For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted". You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything, in Heaven above or in the Earth beneath, or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents up to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments. If my people who are called by my name, humble themselves and pray, AND TURN FROM THEIR WICKED WAYS, I will hear from Heaven, will forgive their sins, and will heal their land. And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. This, then, is how you should pray: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins. "Matthew 5-7 NIV Bible Gateway", we can use google search. These are the teachings, The Righteousness of our Lord Jesus Christ our God. REPENT, and start doing what is right. If you abide my teachings, you are really my disciples; then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free. A time is coming and has now come, that the true worshipers will worship the Father in Spirit and Truth. God is Spirit, so his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and Truth; they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. In the New Heaven and New Earth, only Righteousness dwells. May the Spirit of our Lord Jesus Christ our God be with you all.

  • The reason this company is struggling to find staff is because they pay very low wages. It doesn't make sense for a well qualified British person to do this job. The BBC are framing this as a bad thing but it's a sign that the UK is an economically advanced economy. In other words, a good thing. There are plenty of UK workers who would want to do this job but the care home might have to start thinking about how they can improve productivity and think about how they can entice better staff. From that brief clip it looks like this woman bought an old Victorian town house, made every room a bedroom and then decided to call it a care home. It didn't look very busy either and the clip said she had another one which is probably equally poorly thought out. Much like a lot of private care homes, it didn't look like she was offering a brilliant service. Yet still, she's able to get foreign workers to relocate in order to work for her. The fact that someone is willing to relocate 1,000+ miles to take a minimum wage job in this country is a sign of prosperity. I'm not surprised that a poorly run care home are struggling to find staff in the UK but the BBC can't frame that as a failing. It's because a lot of UK workers can command better wages.

    • @Rara the unemployment rate is expected to rise to 2.1 million next year but you have made a false assumption that all the unemployed are foreigners. Yes, some foreigners get benefits when unemployed but they also contribute to the system with VAT and income tax receipts when they work. Some unemployed people are British but then again some of them are disabled, elderly or carers. It's not as black and white to suggest that no British people want to do those jobs or that foreigners should be blocked from doing them. I'm baffled as to why you think Brexit supporters be forced to work in the care sector...

      Connor VickeryConnor Vickery27 ਦਿਨ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ
    • They can commend benefits you mean. 1.7 million people are unemployed and are receiving some sort of financial support that is not available in those countries. So they are prepared to cross that distance to take that job. English don’t want to care for their old parents, they don’t want those care jobs but also they don’t want the job to be filled by EU immigrants or others. Some are even suggesting Euthanasia as the solution. 🙄 Brexiteers voters should be tracked and forced to work for the care sector.

Expecting to rely on foreign workers because they will work for effectively less than the minimum wage is just promoting exploitation. The middle men who run care homes and provide care workers charge huge sums from the state and rip off their workers. The solution is easy - pay a decent wage.

    • @pax und peace The Labour party undercut the British workforce aswell as using tax payers money to ship companies to eastern Europe, the then redundant staff couldn't get jobs because of cheap European labour, something which the Conservatives stopped so how's about you climb off that high horse now!

    • @shamanahaboolist we as a society. I think it's a bit more realistic to not be black and white and rely on statistics, there's probably still conservatives out there who care about this situation but keep voting against their interests out of misplaced loyalty. Idgaf tbh, Labour are really no better they are all under the spell of neoliberalism which wants to transfer publicly generated wealth into private hands and has done for four decades and this is where we are. I'm currently going through an employment tribunal after working as a support worker to argue with a Lord about the crumbs. The Low Pay Commission decided against carer's full pay for sleep ins at work, the government won't uphold their own laws about NMW exactly because we are in late stage capitalism and that means the state protects corporate interests more than people. The care industry is an abomination full of abuse of caring labour, under the Tories or the Labour. I'll post an article you might find interesting in another comment.

    • @Lola Colt What do you mean "we"? Way I see it, it's 41% of 67% of the voting population that voted Tory that actively hate those less fortunate than themselves and the 33% that didn't even vote that don't care. In the care jobs it is directly the executives who review people's pay who are responsible, with a side of who is the clique they walk in who encourage such anti-social behaviour. They're the ones who need a good shoeing the most and the Tories need to be totally disbanded for the egregious way they behave.

    • That's disingenuous. That work mostly fell on women, who did the unpaid domestic care labour, and now the care industry is gendered with 70% female workforce on poverty wages because we STILL don't recognise the importance of care which is not automatable like building cars with robots is nowadays, and we still don't give a flying fuk about the situation.
